About Debbie
Debbie has supported families in their reproductive health choices for over 29 years through Doula services, childbirth education, lactation support, public health, and Midwifery. The primary focus of Debbie’s Midwifery career is Black maternal health. Debbie was the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Financial Officer of the first black-owned birth center in Los Angeles, The Community Birth Center. Debbie, alongside Jhoanna Galvez, is the Co-Creator and Co-Director responsible for implementing a Group Prenatal Program with wrap-around lactation and mental health services for the Black Maternal Health Center of Excellence, working in partnership with Charles Drew University of Science and Medicine.
Having the privilege of interning at Jennie Joseph’s Commonsense Childbirth Easy Access Clinic in 2013, Debbie is deeply inspired by JJ Way® model and is proud to be a certified JJ Way® provider. Debbie has implemented the core concepts of the JJWay® into her private practice, Tribe Midwifery since its inception. Debbie is honored to have the opportunity to expand this model of care with The Well-Being Alliance while building on the strengths of the Midwives Model of Care™ to reach a population most impacted by poor outcomes. The current Black Maternal health crisis in America continues to inspire Debbie to create more concrete solutions from her lived experiences as someone working intensely in the trenches. Expanding the values of her private practice to The Well-Being Alliance allows Debbie to bring an unparalleled understanding of proven solutions that truly make a difference in reproductive justice on a broader scale.

About Jhoanna
Jhoanna (She/They/Siya) is a queer midwife born and raised in Los Angeles to a Filipino immigrant family. Jhoanna has been attending birth for 15 years. She was initially inspired by midwives who provided Midwifery care as a tool to decrease infant and maternal mortality rates in the US and the world. Jhoanna believes increasing access to midwifery care rooted in birth justice is a tool to improve experiences and outcomes for families and future generations. She provides direct service in her private practice and intentionally participates in developing programs which expand access to midwifery care. Jhoanna collaborated on the creation of Jumpstart. This program was designed by BIPOC midwives and the California Association of Licensed Midwives ( CALM) to advance diversity in the profession of midwifery by preparing QTBIPOC midwifery students for the North American Midwifery Registry (NARM) exam.
As Co- Creator and Co- Director of Black Maternal Health Center of Excellence Group Prenatal Clinic, Jhoanna, and Debbie Allen have experience in building programs and partnerships from vision to implementation.
Jhoanna is excited The Well-Being Alliance will expand access to midwifery care to the diverse and melanated Los Angeles community.
In her free time, you’re likely to find Jhoanna either cooking, tending to her garden or pursuing a multitude of creative projects.
